i Lead Debt

The Council for Debt Collectors was established by the Debt Collectors Act 114 of 1998 to regulate the occupation of debt collector.  The ultimate goal of the Act is to transform the debt collection system in South Africa by monitoring the conduct and professionalism of debt collectors.

As a result of  debt collectors requesting to be regulated and the Department of Justice frequently receiving complaints from the public, the Debt Collectors Act was adopted by Parliament.

The Act not only provides for the exercise of control over the occupation of debt collectors, but legalizes the recovery of fees or remuneration by registered debt collectors.
